Web Home Page: The Zomba Plateau rises 1 000 m above the surrounding plains and protects patches of montane evergreen forest, exotic plantations and open grassland. The plateau offers spectacular views over the Shire River Valley and incorporates several peaks, the highest of which is Chiradzulu at 2 084 m above sea level. The forest and grassland contain abundant birdlife. The area is subject to climatic extremes, with high temperatures from August to November, thunderstorms from November to April, and heavy mist in the winter months. Location: Southern part of Malawi; north-east of Blantyre. Access: From Blantyre follow the main road westwards to Limbe, then turn northwards (M3) and continue to Zomba; from Zomba follow a signposted narrow track north-westwards to the plateau. Internal roads may be difficult to negotiate during the rains. Accommodation: Kuchawe Inn provides hotel accommodation. There is also a camping site with basic facilities close to Kuchawe Inne. Other facilities: 24 km of scenic drives; self-guided nature trails; trout-fishing. Open: Throughout the year.
